I'm Nobody
02:33
|
|||
I’m nobody. Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there’s a pair of us.
Now that we’re aware of us
Maybe I can be
nobody for you
and you nobody for me.
I won’t tell if you won’t,
then they’d advertise.
How dreary to be one
everyone else buys,
so public like a frog
admired in the bog
no way to hide
from all those prying eyes.
I’m nobody. Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there’s a pair of us.
Now that we’re aware of us
Maybe I can be
nobody for you
and you nobody for me.
Maybe I can be
nobody for you
and you nobody for me.
Original Poem:
I’m Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there’s a pair of us!
Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!
How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one’s name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!

Wild Nights
01:32
|
|||
Wild nights - Wild nights!
Were I with thee
Wild nights should be
Our luxury!
Futile - the winds -
To a Heart in port -
Done with the Compass -
Done with the Chart!
Rowing in Eden -
Ah - the Sea!
Might I but moor - tonight -
In thee!
Wild nights - Wild nights!
Were I with thee
Wild nights should be
Our luxury!
Futile - the winds -
To a Heart in port -
Done with the Compass -
Done with the Chart!
Rowing in Eden -
Ah - the Sea!
Might I but moor - tonight -
In thee!
Rowing in Eden -
Ah - the Sea!
Might I but moor - tonight -
In thee!
Original Poem:
Wild nights - Wild nights!
Were I with thee
Wild nights should be

Futile - the winds -

Done with the Compass -
Done with the Chart!
Rowing in Eden -
Ah - the Sea!
Might I but moor - tonight -
In thee!

Hope Is the Thing
04:06
|
|||
“Hope” (you told me) is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash that little Bird
That kept so many warm –
Since then--
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
Yes, “Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

A Thought Went Up
04:11
|
|||
A thought went up my mind today,
Something I held dear
But did not finish—it's some way back--
I could not fix the year.
Where it went, why it came
This second time today,
Or what it was I surely
Have no art to say.
But somewhere in my soul I know
I met that thought before.
This one just reminded me,
Then came my way no more.
A thought went up my mind today
Something I once hold dear
That did not finish some way back,
I could not fix the year.
Why it left and why it came
This second time today
Or what it was I surely
Have no art to say.
But somewhere in my soul I know
This thought was here before,
And whatever made me half forget
Will come my way no more.
But somewhere in my soul I know
This thought was here before,
And whatever made me half forget
Will come my way no more.
Original Poem:
A Thought went up my mind today —
That I have had before —
But did not finish — some way back —
I could not fix the Year —
Nor where it went — nor why it came
The second time to me —
Nor definitely, what it was —
Have I the Art to say —
But somewhere — in my Soul — I know —
I’ve met the Thing before —
It just reminded me — ’twas all —
And came my way no more —

A Certain Slant
03:50
|
|||
There's a certain Slant of light,
Winter Afternoons –
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes –
Heavenly Hurt, it gives us –
Yet we can find no scar,
Just internal difference –
Where the Meanings, are –
None may teach it – Any –
'Tis the seal Despair –
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the Air –
When it comes, the Landscape listens –
Shadows – hold their breath –
When it goes, it's like the Distance
On the look of Death –
There's a certain Slant of light,
Winter Afternoons –
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes –
When it comes, the Landscape listens –
Shadows – hold their breath –
When it goes, it's like the Distance
On the look of Death –
When it comes, the Landscape listens –
Shadows – hold their breath –
When it goes, it's like the Distance
On the look of Death –

Just Because
03:44
|
|||
Just because he loves her
We pry to see why she’s so fair.
What’s the difference on her face
From features others bear?
It will not stall her stately pace
That we might halt behind
About as far out of her sight
As we are out of his mind.
Not hoping for his notice
We know it’s she he’s yearning for.
It’s her glory’s far sufficiency
That makes our trying poor.
Just because he loves her
We pry to see why she’s so fair.
What’s the difference on her face
From features others bear?
It will not stall her stately pace
That we might halt behind
About as far out of her sight
As we are out of his mind.
Not hoping for his notice
We know it’s she he’s yearning for.
It’s her glory’s far sufficiency
That makes our trying poor.
It’s her glory’s far sufficiency
That makes our trying poor.
Original Poem:
Because He loves Her
We will pry and see if she is fair
What difference is on her Face
From Features others wear.
It will not harm her magic pace
That we so far behind—
Her Distances propitiate
As Forests touch the Wind
Not hoping for his notice vast
But nearer to adore
’Tis Glory’s far sufficiency
That makes our trying poor.

Tell All the Truth
02:39
|
|||
Tell all the truth but tell it slant —
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind —
So tell all the truth but tell it slant —
Because success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind —
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind —
Original Poem:
Tell all the truth but tell it slant —

Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind —
